Don’t Try To Become Exceptional (Focus On Becoming Mentally Okay)

There are times that you think you are in a balanced state. That is where you feel the emotional and mental aspect are getting along with each. It seems like there is nothing that can break your sense of well-being. With that, you feel that the thing you positively have right at the moment is what will make you an exceptional one. Perhaps that is because you know you can control your thoughts and feelings and that you are confident that it will not affect your decisions at any cost.

Maybe you believe that the balance you have will allow you to become ahead of everything you do. With that, you get the impression that you needed to become extraordinary. But do you feel relaxed about your condition? Think of this, “Knowing your risk factors for depression and other mental-health diagnoses, and how your mental health may be impacted by the medications you take is a crucial part of taking control of your mental and physical health.” Julia Hogan, LCPC said.

A Manic Over Achiever

“The most helpful definition of being positive is having hope and confidence in one’s ability to handle what’s tough, along with remembering that nothing is all negative all the time,” explains Jo Eckler, PsyD, a therapist in Austin, Texas. However, the problem with people with too much confidence is that they do not anticipate failure. Well, maybe it can be a great thing because it can help with motivation. However, the attitude of becoming an overachiever is one factor that makes everything dangerous. Not only it can damage focus and concentration, but it can also affect a person’s point of view. But it is not like you will commit a crime if you get to feel overconfident about yourself and dream of becoming exceptional. No, it is nothing like that. There are chances that the result is different from what you thought and what everybody else’s believes.

The desire of becoming exceptional gets noted for those people who can both have skills and luck. That is only a once in a lifetime possibility, though. For most people, aiming for extraordinary things leads to the belief that things can never be enough. It means that most people haven’t managed to beat the insane statistical odds of becoming almost perfect. With that, individuals will start cursing and hating themselves because of failure.

Mental Stability

You might wonder what makes someone extraordinary. Well, there are tons of reasons. However, it is not a guarantee that because they are exceptional, you can also become one just because you think you can be one. Face it. You need to understand that being rare does not mean people can do a lot of things. There is no assurance that the great minds of these individuals are stable and at its best performing level. So that means if you only rely on the idea that because you have a balanced emotional and mental health, you can do anything, you are wrong. Things can become different for all we know. “I believe that human beings have an inherent longing and need for wholeness and balance, which is our natural state of being.” Jennifer Bradley, Psy.D., HSPP, Clinical Psychologist said. So aiming for exceptionality, it is not going to be worth it.

Honestly, if you get to have a balanced mental and emotional state, give thanks to that. It is not always that people get a hold of that positivity. Do not try and ruin your mindfulness just because you want to become unique or more likely exceptional. Allow things to happen accordingly. Just aim to become mentally okay, and everything will go well.

The Invincibility Of Mental Health Problems

The enigma with a lot of us is that we often forget that mental conditions are sometimes invisible. That even if there are individuals who tell us that they are not happy; there is a significant chance that we ignore it entirely. Most of the times, we believe that whenever we see confident persons, we automatically assume they are all self-aware individuals. However, we entirely do not know what is going on in their lives. There are too many assumptions that somehow leave the whole situation in a bias state. And even if we asked a therapist, the expert will agree that it is genuinely unfair for an individual to fight his emotional and mental battles alone.

It is understandable that when it comes to mental health, a lot of individuals try as much harder to hide what they are going through. “Mental health is complex, and it would be a lot easier if we were like cars.” Dr. Mitch Keil, clinical psychologist once said. Perhaps they don’t want others to judge them and think that they are weak. Or maybe these people only want to solve their issues alone because they don’t want to become a burden to others. Whatever reasons they have, it is entirely understandable. However, for some of us who happen to notice signs and symptoms of an unwanted psychological condition, we must not ignore it. We need to allow ourselves to become involved in these anxious and depressed individuals’ lives. We need to help them understand their situations. But for us to do that, we have to know the facts about those individuals who are struggling with mental health problems.

(Are you struggling? If you are, contact one of the counselors from BetterHelp. It can give you clarity of mind and ease, as well.)

Suicidal Incidents

Men are less likely to discuss their emotional and mental problems compared to women. That is the reason why their suicidal numbers are much higher than women. And since most of them are concern about their ego, these men with mental illnesses are also unwilling to seek professional help. A lot of studies can confirm this, and they consider this the most challenging part of treating mental health issues. That is because men picture out mental and emotional problems as a sign of weakness. There is a significant stigma behind a man who often feels emotional. It is as if there is a reminder that once a man feels depressed, he becomes incapable. That is the reason why most men cope from a mental condition in silence. “Not all people who have thoughts of suicide end up acting on those thoughts. But for those who do, generally there is deep emotional pain combined with a belief that things will never improve.” Dr. Chantal Gagnon PhD LMHC explains.

In Denial

The problem with mental health issues is that nobody wants to admit they have a mental disorder. No one wants to accept that something is wrong with them. These individuals do not want to acknowledge that they are struggling. That is primarily even if their psychological conditions affect others with their negative actions or behavior. Sometimes, these people are not aware of how much they are hurting others as well. With that, it becomes a strong barrier that does not allow a resolution. In some unfortunate cases, those in denial individuals are more likely to justify the things they often do. They will insist that it is part of their personality. Honestly, it makes help becomes impossible.

Linked Disorder

What typically also makes it impossible to address mental health problems are the disorders that are related to some of it unnoticingly. Some examples of these are eating disorders, anxiety, panic attacks, sleep deprivation, and a lot more. The thing is, people do not realize they are creating a bad habit out of their psychological issue. And since no one seems to care about it much, a lot of people agree that it is okay to experience those disturbing things. Funny, because there is always a stigma that gets attached to every individual’s belief with regards to supposed normal reaction of the public towards emotional and mental struggle.

Mental health problems are a lot more complicated than what most people think. It is not just as simple as determining what an individual is currently feeling right now, or what thoughts are running on his head. Mental health problems will continue to linger without any medical or professional treatment. And since the environmental and social issues will also become triggering factors to its unfortunate development, all people receive no exemptions.

Until today, a lot of experts are still figuring out other significant cases of mental illnesses. These professionals are trying to look into it and come up with valuable information that can be useful to the public. But as of the other known psychological conditions, it is essential that we all keep ourselves involved with helping those who are in need. With that, we all have to understand the silent facts of the many psychological problems. Note that “Making the decision to enter into treatment requires a commitment to prioritize your mental health and make some significant life changes.” Catherine “Katie” Ness, MA, LCPC said.

When Depressed Or Anxious, Just Do Your Thing

It’s that time of the week yet again. I have had a good night’s sleep, and I was relaxed last night. There were no problems. Last night was excellent. After work, I went to the gym and did my kickboxing session. Then, I also opted for a Swedish massage. I am supposed to be relaxed and rejuvenated. My psychology last night was “be calm and cool,” but my mental state today says otherwise. Today it means, “stay in bed, and be sad.” Oh, what a day it’s going to be if I’m like this again!

Mental Health Tips: Overcoming Depression

Are you aware that the rate of people who suffer from major depressive disorder has risen over the years? Nowadays, several individuals end up being depressed because of the difficult circumstances that they encounter every single day. Unfortunately, no matter how much one tries to improve his mental health, he or she may go through a traumatic experience or get exposed to adverse circumstances that will increase his or her stress, anxiety, and depression.

“Someone suffering depression may know that there is something wrong or different going on. They are not likely to proclaim themselves depressed, however, or be overly receptive to being labeled by you.” That is according to Kurt Smith, Psy.D., LMFT, LPCC, AFC. So if you believe that you have the signs and symptoms of major depressive disorder, it is best to consult with a psychiatrist as soon as possible. Look for a professional who can help you get a better understanding of your current mental condition. Always take note that you have to do it fast so that you can still prevent any severe damage to your condition. Otherwise, you will end up having suicidal thoughts.

Before we move forward, it is essential for you to understand that depression is not permanent. Just because you suffer from this kind of disorder in the present does not mean that you are going to go through it for the rest of your life. There are still several ways on how you can overcome and defeat depression. Do not easily give up so that you can still enjoy a life that is away from this mental illness. Here are the useful things that you must always remember:

Talk To Someone

Do not hesitate to talk about what you feel and think to someone whom you can trust. Keep an open or clear mind at all times and believe that there are people in your life who are more than willing to help you in your fight against depression. Knowing that you have someone to open up to can already improve your mood and feeling. However, if you are not entirely comfortable doing this, it is suggested to try seeking professional help. Search for a therapist whom you can talk to about your issues and problems. “Why talk about your problems including mental health challenges? Just talking about your situation to someone can reduce your stress and help you feel better.” Dr. Aaron Kaplan, PsyD, Clinical Psychologist said.

If you feel that you cannot talk to your loved ones, you can always turn to BetterHelp. It is a website that offers counseling for those who need it. You can call them, chat or text.

Eat Healthily

Depression can make you lose focus and attention to the things that you used to do. There are times when you may also lose appetite. You will not be in the mood to eat not because you are free from hunger but because you are too sad or lonely to move. You would rather stay in bed or lock up in your room than do the regular things you used to enjoy, such as eating. It is time to change this and force yourself to start a healthy lifestyle. You need to follow a balanced diet so that you can get the right amount of nutrients to feel recharged or energized for the day. When you start eating healthy, you also begin to feel good about yourself. Keep in mind that doing this will benefit not only your present self but also your future self. “Eating healthfully, exercising regularly and getting a good night’s sleep are all important elements in a mentally and physically healthy life.” A reminder from Staci Lee Schnell, MS, CS, LMF.

Keep Yourself Busy

Instead of staying in the corner and wallowing into sadness, it is best if you will invest your time in doing things that are exciting and interesting. Do not be afraid to try something new. Go out of your comfort zone and keep yourself busy doing things that make you feel alive. Find your passion and dedicate yourself in doing it. The advantage or benefit of this technique is that you can get your mind off things that contribute to your depression. Instead of feeling down or sad, your new hobbies can cheer you up.

Be With Your Loved Ones

In times of difficulty and hardship, it is ideal for spending your time with the people you love. When you do this, there is a good chance that your mood will start to improve. The reason behind this occurrence is the fact that the ones you hold dearly and closely to your heart are the same reasons that will motivate you to keep your fight against depression. Just by thinking about them, you are somehow giving hope to yourself. As such, do not waste any passing time without letting these people know how much you love and treasure them. Make it a special habit to spend quality time with these individuals.

Depression is a battle that you can survive. Just keep going and follow the tips we listed above for a more comfortable journey.

5 Smart Ways To Deal With Someone Who Has A Mental Illness

Finding out that someone you love has a mental illness can be challenging to handle on your part. There will be different struggles because the first reaction that you might get is denial. It is a wrong move on your part because the right thing to do is to handle the issue and face it head-on. Take note that the mental health of your partner should become your number one priority. Do not worry because it is not yet the end of the world. There are many ways on how you can help the person you love handle his mental issues.

Below is a list of the five smart ways that you can consider when it comes to dealing with someone who has a mental disorder or illness.

Tip No. 1: Educate Yourself

“Couples often feel that they know and understand their partner, and are compatible on most issues. However, this is a mistake.”  Dr. Chantal Gagnon PhD LMHC said. Make sure that you take all the time necessary to study or learn about the mental illness of your partner. As much as possible, educate yourself about it so that you will not have a hard time helping the other person deal with the said problem. Consider yourself lucky because it is now easier to get specific information about the various kinds of mental illnesses. Take note that your primary focus should be all about the illness that your loved one is going through. You can always read journals or inquire from a psychiatrist.

Tip No. 2: Never Pity Him

The last thing that your partner wants is to feel that he is worthless and useless in your life. While your intentions may be great, it is best if you will not let your partner feel that he is taking so much of your time. Keep in mind that it is still possible to express love and admiration to the other person without making him feel pity. One of the things that you can do is to initially observe from afar before you do anything. Approach the other person only if he starts calling out to you, or if he’s asking for your help. Make him feel that nothing has changed because of his condition and that both of you are in equal footing. Note that “A mental illness cannot be willed away or brushed aside with a change in attitude. Ignoring the problem doesn’t give it the slip either.” Deborah Serani, PsyD said.

Tip No. 3: Connect With One Another

Just because you are living under the same roof does not mean that your spouse is already well connected with you. Because of this, it is highly recommended to take all the time you need to build a more intimate relationship. Make him feel that he can always come to you whenever he wants to. At the same time, do not forget the significance of having effective communication with one another. Find time to talk about what is going through in your mind. However, it is highly recommended for you to think twice before opening your mouth. Do not do something that can potentially hurt or offend your loved one. Furthermore, always choose to have honest and open communication with each other. “If your intention is to live a meaningful and healthy life, you will make decisions that support this intention, and feel good about yourself when you succeed in this purpose.” That is what Deborah Khoshaba Psy.D. used to say.

Tip No. 4: Spend Time Together

It is connected with the previous paragraph, but it talks about a different way of connecting with your partner. What you have to do is to spend more quality time together. It means going out of your way to having a solemn and beautiful moment with your loved one. You can always choose to go on vacation. Take note that the more you travel together, the happier he becomes. If this continues to happen, it can help a lot in improving his mental health. Nonetheless, if the condition is too severe that makes traveling impossible, the next thing that you can do is to turn ordinary days into special ones by making grand gestures.

Tip No. 5: Take Care Of Yourself

Above all else, do not forget to value your mental health. Remember that you cannot succeed in helping your loved one if you do not have a good state of mind. Because of this, you must also find time to determine if you are going through something that is serious and can affect both your physical and mental condition. If you feel that something is not right, be sure to consult with a doctor or psychiatrist. Whenever you feel stressed out, be sure to take things slow and rest.

Follow the tips mentioned above for a happier life with your partner.

The Environment’s Most Pressing Problems

It was about forty years ago when the first Earth Day was recognized and celebrated. However, until now, the earth has gotten dirtier, water scarcer, and the ozone layer more prone to danger more than ever. The environmental problems have only become magnified and increased in number – by a hundredfold. In fairness to most individuals, including families, friends, and the government including, we have done our part in improving the environment and increasing awareness about these environmental issues.

For this year’s Earth Day, we’re focusing and giving the spotlight on some of the most pressing environmental problems that have been affecting us nowadays. We will also include some tips on what we can do to help fix our ecosystem and restore balance in this awesome place we call earth – our home.

Climate Change

Undeniably, climate change is inevitable, which most people blame on greenhouse gas emissions. Of course, the government is also blamed for not strictly implementing a strong policy that avoids the use of fossil fuels, instead of utilizing sustainable forms of energy. Because of this, the earth is vulnerable to wildfires, floods, heat waves, and droughts now more than ever. When these calamities happen, perhaps the public will be more assertive in expressing their fears and worries to the policymakers and ask them to act immediately before it’s too late.

Tip: Your cars and other transportation are one of the causes of greenhouse gas emissions. You may help by not driving every day. Try biking or walking. Aside from doing your part to slow down climate change, you’re also helping yourself stay fit and healthy! But if you must use a vehicle, go electric instead.

The most predominant kind of pollution is air pollution, which is a second close to climate change. Air pollution is also a result of the same gas emissions that lead to global warming, as in climate change. These emissions create hazy, dirty conditions in the big cities around the world. China is among the big cities that are endangering its residents by the mountains of smog and fog that circulate in the country. But if you think the smog is exclusive only to Beijing and the whole of China, then you’re wrong. Scientists have discovered that the air pollution brought by the Chinese is further escalating the storms in the Pacific Ocean and contributing to the unpredictable weather in America as well.

On the other hand, other forms of pollution are equally hazardous, such as water pollution and soil pollution. The Natural Resources Defense Council revealed that dirty water is among the world’s greatest health risks. Additionally, soil contamination through toxic metals, pesticides, and fertilizers endangers food security and is a leading health risk to almost all populations worldwide.

Tip: To minimize pollution, efforts in decreasing the use of fuel and using the alternative green energy is one solution.

Water Scarcity

The problem of water supply increases as the population increases. Freshwater is only 3%, and there are approximately 1 billion people who need access to it. Water scarcity is not only a problem in developing countries, as revealed in the state of California where droughts are inevitable. The projection is that by mid-century, over one-third of the countries in the lower 48 states will have been at a greater risk of water shortage.

Tip: Replacing the usual faucets with low flow ones would be one of the simple ways you can help in your way. Also, it is recommended that lawn irrigation is done in the mornings or evenings when the air is cooler and lesser evaporation occurs. Fixing leaks, turning off the sink when not in use, and taking shorter baths are more solutions that are easy to do.

Forests, as we all should know by now, play an important role in balancing our ecosystem and preventing many disasters from easily destroying the earth. It helps mitigate climate change as they absorb CO2, which harms the environment and heightens global warming. But currently, 15% of the gas emissions originated from deforestation. Tree cutting has endangered many animal species and even humans who are dependent on forests so they can thrive. Over the past 50 years, the Amazon rainforest lost 17% of its trees because of the booming cattle ranch business.

Tip: The government has implemented the No Plastic Policy in malls and other major stores to boycott the use of tree materials. Using paper towels are also discouraged.

Soil Degradation

The improvement of industrial agriculture has had a major impact on clean and healthy land preservation. This has resulted in soil degradation, which consequently led to water pollution and clogged waterways. As per the records from the World Wildlife Fund, about 50% of the earth’s soil has been eroded and lost over the last 150 years.

Tip: As improvements in agriculture are supported, there should also be ways that are made to avoid its ill effects. Sustainable agriculture enables both the planet and the people to benefit. In your little way, you can also help by using non-toxic fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides.

Pills And My Psychological State

I was 16-years old when I had my first panic attack. My body experiences a fight or flight mode, and it was a sad day because I was literally on a plane at that time. I thought “am I experiencing claustrophobia?” “Was it due to a subconscious trauma” or “was it bad timing?” I don’t know. I have so many questions as to why I am in a psychological dilemma that I don’t know anything about at that moment. From that instance, my mom gave me my first 10 mg valium that somehow made me feel better.

Psychiatric Medications And Mental Health

Nowadays, people are suffering from several mental illnesses because along with all the innovations are tons of stressors that disturb the peace of our minds, resulting in mental health problems.People should be aware that they need help with these conditions. Anxiety and depression are widespread issues that we face, but sadly, only a few are paying attention. Why? It’s because people think these conditions will pass, but no, they won’t. They need proper treatment including correct medications.

From the beginning, we all know that medicines play an important role in treating medical conditions as they are dealing with the composition of the human body. Experts spent several years of study to help in discovering treatments for medical problems that we face including mental health illnesses.

What Are Common Psychiatric Drugs And What Is Their Contribution To Mental Health?

Antidepressant drugs are commonly used to treat depression. Usually, the general physician prescribes this for mild depression. The patient will then be under observation as the doctor will need to know if it is improving the condition. The doctor will then increase the dosage if the situation does not improve, or he may also opt to prescribe a different antidepressant. If the depression does not improve with only the medication, the doctor may also need to prescribe therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy. “CBT is a relatively brief, skills-focused treatment that has been shown to be effective for a wide variety of mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, anger, social skills deficits, and relational problems.” Shelby Harris, PsyD, CBSM explains.

Antipsychotic drugs are for the short-term treatment of bipolar disorder. They help in managing the symptoms of acute mania or severe depression such as delusions and hallucinations. Antipsychotics help in regulating the normal function of the brain. They affectmood, thinking, and perception. They could also improve manic episodes rapidly, making them very useful in managing the symptoms of bipolar depression. But remember, “Some patients with bipolar disorder may have trouble complying with medication and/or dealing with the consequences of the disorder.” says Simon Rego, PsyD.

Anxiolytic drugs are for the prevention and treatment of anxiety disorders. The effectiveness of this drug is rather quick, and for that, it may cause a patient to be dependent. It is not advisable for patients who have a history of substance abuse as the effectscould be quite addictive. It is also not suggestedforlong-term use.

Mood Stabilizers

Mood stabilizers are helpful in the management of mood disorders frequently associated with bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, or schizoaffective disorder. As the name implies, they are useful in dealing with the “mood swings” and prevent manic and depressive episodes.

“Sleep helps your brain work properly. While you’re sleeping, your brain processes complex stimuli.” Staci Lee Schnell, MS, CS, LMFT said. Sedatives or sleeping pills help in reducing brain activity causing drowsiness. It results to the patient sleeping and relaxing that’s why it is called sleeping pills. The effect of this drug is somewhat addictive as it gives the feeling of relaxation that’s why it is not advisable for patients to take it for an extended period.

Stimulants are useful in treating mental health conditions such as attention-deficit disorder and narcolepsy. It helps stimulate cell signals and improve psychological processes in the brain and throughout the body as well. It helps in dopamine release. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter responsible for the transmission of signals between the cells of the brain.

Acquiring these drugs needs a prescription from a doctor as they have adverse effects when misused. It could result in uncontrollable emotions, sleep disorders, sexual disorders, and more. Also, medications have a direct impact on the chemical composition of the body making it dangerous to take them without professional advice.

Psychiatric medications are beneficial in the treatment of mental health illnesses, and people should be aware of it. Awareness is necessary to disprove beliefs and fear about mental health drugs and the stigma surrounding psychiatric help. Yes, psychiatric medications can be dangerous if not taken correctly, and that’s why there are doctors who dedicate their lives to helping us with our battle against medical health conditions including mental health.
